I recently got the chance to try out a new co-wash product courtesy of Hairstory. Hairstory invited me to take on their 30 Day Challenge of no shampoo, conditioner or masks for an entire month! I was a little bit skeptical at first because I have tried other co-washes in the past and I was not very satisfied with the results… until New Wash came along.

So what is a co-wash?

Co-washing is short for “conditioner-only washing.” This means ditching the shampoo and opting to rely strictly on conditioner to wash your hair. Co-washing is a great alternative to keeping your hair clean and healthy because conditioners and products like Hairstory’s New Wash do not contain the harmful ingredients found in shampoo.

Shampoo contains the same exact detergents found in industrial cleaners. Ew. How can that be safe to use on your head? Using strong chemicals like this in your hair can cause itching, rashes, or dry scalp. This can cause your hair to feel super dry and frizzy.

Before using Hairstory’s New Wash, I knew chemicals like SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) were bad for my hair. But even after tons of research, I couldn’t find the right product to replace my usual shampoo and conditioner routine.

Hairstory New Wash

New Wash is an all-in-one cleanser with a mixture of essential oils that gently cleans and protects your hair. New Wash is completely paraben, phthalate, detergent and sulfate-free. It does not foam or lather like regular shampoos but still gets the deep clean without all the damage that comes along with other hair care products.

My hair always felt extremely dry after using shampoo but after using it for so many years, you start to think that’s normal. It’s not. Hairstory’s New Wash respects your body’s natural moisture barrier that harsh detergents in regular shampoos destroy.

This co-wash retails for $40 USD for an 8oz bottle (236ml). Hairstory ships to all 50 states along with Canada and the UK. The great part is that for the US, they offer free shipping on all first-time orders. Subsequent orders are charged a flat $5 fee. For more shipping information to your area, you can read their policy.

The Results

I strictly used New Wash in my hair for 30 days and I was very pleased with the results! There is a bit of the learning curve with this product. You have to use a good amount of it in your hair. With regular shampoo, a little goes a long way, but with New Wash you need to pump enough to saturate every strand of your hair and really massage it into your scalp. You also need to thoroughly rinse it out.

I made the mistake of using too little the first time around and not rinsing my hair long enough. You know when you use conditioner and you’re not sure if all of it has rinsed out? That’s how New Wash feels. Once you know how long you need to rinse for, it’s super simple to use it.

After using the product for a whole month, I did notice my hair was feeling much more nourished and less dry. I noticed less frizz and dryness as well. New Wash feels almost like a conditioner so you aren’t left feeling like you need to follow up with a conditioner afterward.

This product alone is enough to cleanse and condition your hair in one step. I loved this product and it definitely made a difference in my hair. My hair did not feel greasy or oily not once from using New Wash, like I was worried about happening.

In the beginning of the month, I was a bit skeptical about how this product was working for me. The first couple of times, I was a little discouraged and didn’t know if I was using it correctly, but I stuck with it and by week 2 I was feeling much more confident.

My scalp was not dry or irritated and it felt much healthier. My hair looked shinier and more voluminous after just a few uses of this product. By the end of the 4th week, I was hooked! I’ve tried other co-washes before and I was seriously shocked when I saw how well it worked for me. It was so worth it. I felt like my hair was completely transformed from its usual frizzy and dry look. Hairstory’s New Wash has been such a game changer and if $40 sounds a little pricey for a single hair care product to you, let me just say that this one bottle has lasted me SO long.

It’s been over a month since I started using it and I still have a little less than half the bottle left. Plus, you don’t need to use any other products in your hair along with it because it cleans and conditions in one. If you are sensitive to the harsh chemicals in shampoos or want to learn about more alternatives for shampoo, I definitely recommend trying out New Wash!

Have you ever tried co-washing before? What do you think about it?
