College life is tough. Between homework, studying, your job, AND keeping up with your social life — it’s easy to be short on time. College students are busy and that’s a fact. We’re busy with so many things both academic and extracurricular. It can be overwhelming and crazy, but in order to stay sane while in school we need to take care of ourselves. Am I right?!
So what is self-care?
Self-care is doing things for yourself. It’s for you, by you. It’s being able to take a step back from your hectic schedule and identifying your needs. What is it that YOU need to happy, successful, satisfied? It’s taking the time to focus on yourself and nurture your mind and body. You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of others, but it’s one thing we easily forget to do.
As a college student, we are often focusing on homework, the next big test, how can we beef up our resumes for after graduation. So many things go through our minds and self-care ends up falling through the cracks far too often.
Self-care should not be something that is forced. It is something you do because you want to and because you want to live a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
It might sound hard, but you can definitely squeeze in the time and prioritize your needs to make sure you’re loving and taking care of yourself. With a few tips on basic self-care, you’ll be able to feel so much better AND continue to ace in school!
1. Eat healthy
Taking care of yourself both inside and out is really important. Self-care starts from within. You don’t have to go crazy and get on a super strict diet. Just make wiser choices and do not skip meals. Eat breakfast everyday. You need to fuel your body with the right foods and be conscious of what you are eating.
Junk food makes you sluggish. Keeping a healthy diet will give you more energy and keep you alert and focused on your goals.
2. Look good. Feel good.
My favorite way for having “me” time with by taking a nice, hot shower or bath. This is the perfect moment to spend time alone! Draw a warm bubble bath and grab your favorite body wash and just take care of YOU!

3. Unplug for an hour
This one is really hard for me to do, but it works! Just unplug for an hour. No Instagram, Twitter, Facebook. Detach yourself from that phone or computer and just go do something you like. Take this time to recharge. You can use this time for exercising, sitting outside, journaling, reading a book. You name it.
Stepping back from social media can make a huge difference. Trust me. It gives you clarity and helps you de-stress from your hectic schedule. If you’re short on time, even 15-30 minutes of no screen time can help too.
Those emails will be there when you get back. Don’t sacrifice your mental health to get everything done!
4. Get more sleep
A lot of college students don’t get the right amount of sleep. There’s just so much to do with so little time. Pfft. I get it. I’m a busy college girl myself. But sleep is something you should not mess around with. You need a healthy amount of sleep to function throughout the day.
If you don’t get a good night’s rest, you won’t be as efficient in your tasks and your grades can easily suffer because of it. If you can’t go to sleep earlier, make room on your schedule for naps.
And no. Not 3 hour naps because who has time for that?!
I’m talking 20-30 minute power naps. It’s my favorite way to take naps because they are quick and you don’t wake up asking yourself what century you’re in. They quickly recharge me and give me the motivation to get things done the rest of the day. It’s the perfect energy boost for when you’re on a time crunch.
5. Get a support system
Friends. Family. Boyfriend. Girlfriend. Anyone.
Build a support system and keep it close at all times. This will help you a ton because they will always be there when you need them. They will back you up and be there when you need a hand. They will support you in everything you do and be there when you need a someone to talk to or vent.
It’s not healthy to keep things bottled up to yourself. It’s essential to have a community of people there for you. Make time to have conversations with these loved ones in your life. Just having someone there can keep you from feeling depressed and overworked from that long to-do list that seems never-ending.
Self-care is necessary when you’re in college. Don’t go without creating a routine for yourself because it can be detrimental in the long run. You will eventually burn out from not having even a minute to yourself.
Listen to your body and focus on your needs to stay happy and healthy. And if your friends or classmates are feeling stressed or pulling all-nighters, encourage them to take breaks.
Taking breaks when you need them and practicing self-care is the best thing you can do for yourself.
